Author Interview with Andrea Cooper

Today, we'll be interviewing Andrea Cooper, author of Garnet Dagger and Viking Fire, on the blog.

So let's give a warm welcome to Andrea

*clapping in the background*

Okay let's get this show started then.

1. What inspired you to become a writer?

I’ve always thought of myself as a storyteller. The idea of becoming a write did not happen until years later. As early as I can remember about when I was in second grade, my friends would come up to be at recess and ask what we were going to play that day. I created the characters and plot. I even thought up Space Vampires, hey—don’t laugh, to a 2nd grader it was awesome.

Again, in Elementary school, I remember having a writing assignment about being an inanimate object. I wrote about a piece of chalk stuffed in a box then scrapped as it came out. That was the first time I remember receiving an A on an English paper. Still, I didn’t think to become a writer.

When I was fourteen, I wrote poetry. I don’t remember what started that trend, but it lasted until my early twenties. Then I went through a dry spell and didn’t writing anything. I still thought up characters and their stories, but I had no one to ‘play’ their parts. In my early thirties, I tossed a historical romance book across the room, because to me, it was illogical that a Viking would give up his religion for another without justification. I thought I could write a better story, so I tried. And haven’t stopped writing since.

2. You wrote a historical romance and a paranormal romance. The two are (literally) leagues apart and I am sure come with their own set of challenges. What would you say was challenging about writing both genres?

My two novels have similarities, the paranormal is set in a fantasy/ medieval world and my historical takes place during the Viking era. The differences are that The Garnet Dagger, my paranormal, is full of magic, mythical creatures, and paranormal, while Viking Fire, historical romance, only has a touch of magic.

The challenges were to be as historically accurate as possible in Viking Fire. The paranormal novel had more freedom, but still had to be believable.

3. On that note which book did you enjoy writing more? Do you have a favorite?? (I am evil enough to make you pick a favorite)

You are evil to make me pick a favorite…LOL. I enjoyed writing The Garnet Dagger more. Only because of the freedom of writing a fantasy/ paranormal novel and not only was the first of that genre I had ever written, and it was my debut published novel. I enjoyed writing the story so much that I wrote two more in this series: Son of Dragons and War of Darkness before Garnet was published.

4. How about a favorite character? Which character did you have the most fun writing about?

Another hard question. I had the most fun writing Celeste from The Garnet Dagger because of her quick-wit and spunk despite what she had gone through. I love the way she and Brock bantered with each other.

With all that behind us, I think it’s time we got to know you better.

What’s your favorite genre?

Fantasy Romance (it’s got the best of both and my favorite genres merged into one)

Favorite book?

The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind. It was the first fantasy series I read and opened up this wonderful world that was taboo growing up (I wasn’t even allowed to watch Disney movies).

What do you do when you’re not writing or reading??

Taking care of my two younger kids, playing hack-n-slash and dungeon crawler games, and dancing in Zumba.

TV shows you’re obsessed with?

There are many wonderful shows out now. My favorites are Witches of East End, Sleepy Hallow, Game of Thrones, Dracula (the season started off slow, but it’s better), Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Once Upon a Time, Revenge, and Reign.

I’d like to end this interview by ending with the age-old question.

Do you have any projects planned for the future?

Yes. I am revising Son of Dragons, Book 2 in The Garnet Dagger series, and doing major rewrites for Book 3 War of Darkness. I am also working on a YA Paranormal Romance and adding in a paranormal element to a Native American Historical Romance trilogy I wrote years ago. There are a few new projects vying for next place as well.

Thank you so much for joining us on the blog Andrea!!

Thank you for having me! All the best.

About the Author:
Growing up in Houston, Texas, Andrea has always created characters and stories. But it wasn't until she was in her late twenties that she started writing novels.

What happened that ignited the writing flame in her fingers? Divorced, and disillusioned by love songs and stories. They exaggerate. She thought. Love and Romance are not like that in the real world. Then she met her husband and realized, yes love and romance are exactly like the songs and stories say. She is now a happy wife, and a mom to three kids (two boys and a girl).

Andrea writes paranormal and historical romance. When not writing or reading, one may find Andrea dancing in Zumba.

She believes in the power of change and counting each moment as a blessing. But most importantly, she believes in love.

Viking Fire Excerpt:
Chapter One Ireland 856 CE (condensed)

“I renounce Father for this.” Kaireen threw the elderberry gown.

“Shame on you and your children for speaking such.” Her handmaid, Elva, gathered the damask and then dusted off the rushes. “It’s a wonder one of the clim has not scolded you from your hearth for such talk.”

“No, curse Father for a fool.” She plopped on her bed and a goose feather floated away. With a huff, she leaned against the oak headboard. Red curtains puffed like a robin’s chest around oak poles supporting her wooden canopy.

Her bare feet brushed against the stone floor.

“You know your da arranged a marriage within a season.” Elva smirked.

Kaireen shook her head. “To another land holder,” and waved a hand in disgust, “not t-this heathen. Twice they raided our land in the last month alone. Now father wants me as wife to one of them?” She clenched her fists. “No, I will not marry this Viking.”

Elva smiled, reminding Kaireen of the rumors of her handmaid’s uncanny foresight. Whispers of Elva making strange things happen and often blamed as the cause of Kaireen’s stubborn refusal to behave as a laird’s daughter should.

“You’ve not seen him yet.” Elva wiggled her brows.

“So?” Kaireen shrugged. “I would like to never see him.”

“Well then, would you not like to know if you have a handsome husband or not?” She waited for her response, but Kaireen scowled. Elva chuckled. “I would rather get a good look at him now than the morning after.”

Kaireen’s ears heated. “I am not marrying.” She shook her head for emphasis. “So there will be no morning, nor night, nor wedding.”

“If he is handsome, I may fight you for him.” Elva smiled, deepening the wrinkles around her eyes.

“Welcome to him either way.” Kaireen laughed.

The Garnet Dagger Excerpt:
Chapter One (condensed)

I’ve known death. For over half a millennia, I escorted many to death at the end of my sword. In the eyes of the dying, I watched it shroud them. Foolishly, I thought many more eras would pass before death came for me. It came so swiftly that I could not run; I could not escape. At a village, dressed in human clothes, I took in everything.

I delayed my return to my people as I watched human jugglers bounce torches and knifes. It was autumn equinox and the festivities would continue well into the night. Children laughed as they chased each other. A trail of leaves from their costumes twirled after them. It was dark when I reached the forest.

I hiked slower than my normal speed, so as not to startle whatever human called out. My leather boots crunched upon dried, diseased leaves and bark. Horrified, I glanced up. Branches twisted around each other to suffocating. Lifeless limbs cracked in the wind. Flesh of the trees sloughed off in layers, exposing its bones. Gashes hollowed out chunks of warmth. Fragments of leaves clung to finger tips, marking sepulchers of the dying trees. Trees mourned with wails like splitting wood, and I brought my hands over my ears. I must flee before I became infected, they told me. Flee before the stain of this defilement creeps into you, they warned. Trees spoke to my kind, always had. Yet these trees were in such agony of death that I could not breathe. Felt as though my lungs had folded in on themselves, like a moth unable to break loose from its cocoon.

Author Interview Todd M.Thiede

In the small city of Rockton, Illinois, someone is tired of waiting. He’s tired of standing in line at the grocery store and tired of waiting at the drive-through line. Now he’s doing something about it.

The first murder rocks the city. The entire Bjornson family—except the father, Stephen—has been brutally murdered, and the killer has left a message behind, written in the victim’s blood: Don’t Waste People’s Time. It’s a grizzly start for two young detectives who’ve just become partners. But Max Larkin and Jesse Fairlane put their personal distaste for each other aside and start concentrating on how to find the killer from striking again.

As they investigate the scene of the crime and interview Stephen at the hospital, the clues slowly begin to add up. Could this be a deranged killer who struck ten years ago and has now returned to the area? Before they can answer that question, another murder is reported, and Max and Jesse suddenly realize they have a serial killer on the loose.
But as they get closer to the truth, a past memory begins to haunt Max, one that might lead to a break in the case—or the end of his career.

What genre are you most comfortable writing?

I am most comfortable writing mystery because I have a great imagination.  My wife hates watching shows like SVU and CSI with me because I am really good at solving who did what and why.
When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing at a very young age.  I wrote stories in school and in seventh grade I actually wrote my first book. It wasn’t very long but it was a murder mystery.  The Junior HIgh Murders was the title.  I didn’t get a good grade on it because my teacher thought it was too gory for her.  I have always been interested in mysteries because of my natural investigative mind.
What’s your favorite place in the entire world?

My favorite place in the entire world is anywhere my wife is.  I truly enjoy spending time with her and my kids.  If I could write full time and spend time with my family that would make me the happiest man alive.
What was the hardest part about writing this book?

The hardest part was the background and depth of the characters.  I wrote the story in a short period of time but putting on paper was not easy.  My wife really pushed me and she also helped me finish it.
What are your goals as a writer?

My goals are to write full time and have the Max Larkin detective series be a top seller.  I would like to have Max Larkin be in about 8 books total.  I am currently writing the second one now and should be done in about 2 months.
What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out?

The best tools available today are all on your computer.  Spell check and grammar check.  These do not compare to a good editor though.  The editor is the most important thing for any writer.  You can read and read your own book but you will always miss something.  The editor won’t.
What do you do to unwind and relax?

I like to watch movies and hang with my family.  I would rather be hanging out with them more than anything.  When they are at school, work, or wherever and I am alone I like to play video games to escape the world around me.
What are your current writing projects now?

I am currently writing book two of the Max Larkin detective series.  This is one is called “Lies to Die For”.  It follows our two young detectives in Rockton Illinois yet again.
How do you promote this book?

I promoted this book with twitter, facebook, and book blogs.  Marketing is not my forte but I have had great luck with facebook and twitter.  My publicist is working on more book signings and radio interviews as well.
Who designed the cover?

I came up with the design of the cover.  My publisher sent me many pictures of the clock on the cover and although I put a lot of time in picking the clock.  They didn’t agree with me and came up with that cover.  Although the overall cover design was my idea they used their expertise in making it look like it does.

A massive thank you to Todd for taking the time and speaking to us. It was a pleasure having you here with us.

Author Interview with Maureen Mayer

1- What made you decide on writing this book? What inspired you?

I’m an avid reader, and this past year I decided I wanted to write a book of my own. Problem was...I had no idea what to write! I would literally sit there and try to force the ideas to come out, but they just would flow. Little did I know, all I had to do was sit back and wait for the idea to find me. I was sitting at home one day thinking about my life and certain aspects that I wish were different or that I could change, and that’s when it hit me. The initial spark that triggered the idea for Relinquishing Liberty was the thought of just running away from everything and making a fresh start. That’s where Liberty came in. She was just screaming and begging to come out and tell her story, so that’s exactly what I did. I let her write the story…I was just simply her instrument.
I also owe a lot of authors credit for inspiring me because if it weren’t for them reigniting my love for reading, I never would have written Relinquishing Liberty.

2- When you pictured the characters did they reflect anyone particular
in your life?

I definitely see a bit of myself in Liberty’s character, but I think the one character who reflects the most qualities of someone in my life is Shayne. It wasn’t until I finished writing the book that I realized he is so much life my boyfriend, Michael. He came into my life when I least expected it, and he is by far my missing puzzle piece.

3- If you could meet any of your characters who would it be and why?

I’d have to go with Maddie. She is such a little spitfire and has such a great sense of humor. She says what she wants and doesn’t hold back. It’s impossible not to love her! I’m sure she’d drive me insane at first, but I could definitely see myself getting along with her.

4- Tells us a bit more about Relinquishing Liberty, what are the main key points in the book?

Relinquishing Liberty is about a young woman forced to give up the life she once knew so she can take care of her parents, who have yet to learn how to cope with her brother’s suicide. Liberty is left to pick of the pieces, and after four years of having to put her own life on hold, she finally decides she’s had enough. She’s ready to take back control of her life and makes the decision to up and leave everyone and everything she’s ever known in order to make a fresh start. When Liberty arrives in Savannah, she meets Brett and Maddie, who slowly begin to break down the walls that she had built up after her brother’s suicide.
The last thing she expects is to fall for the reformed player, Shayne Thompson, but soon she discovers they have a lot more in common than just a physical attraction. A secret from Shayne’s past is revealed, and Liberty begins to question everything she’s ever felt for him. She is forced to choose between following her heart and giving up the one person who finally made her feel whole again.

5- What was the hardest part of writing Relinquishing Liberty?

A lot of authors say the hardest part is writing the actual book itself...and it was. I hit a road a block when Liberty decided to give me the silent treatment, and within the four months that I wrote Relinquishing Liberty, I probably spent at least a month not writing anything at all. It was extremely frustrating, and there were so many times that I just wanted to scrap the idea and give up, but everyone who has been supporting me since the very beginning continued to push me through, and 101,400 words later, Relinquishing Liberty was finished.

6- Are you planning on writing any more books? If so would you like to give us a clue to your projects?

Absolutely! As of right now I have plans for at least three more books. I’ve just begun working on the second book in the Second Chances series, Unforeseen Heartbeat, which is Maddie’s book. The third book in the series, which is currently untitled, will be Brett’s book. After that I plan on writing a stand alone book that will also fall into the new adult genre. Hopefully I’ll get inspiration for more books along the way!

A massive thank you for Maureen Mayer for taking the time to speak to us about her book Relinquishing Liberty.

Q & A with Jenn Bennett author of the Arcadia Bell Series

Today we are going to be interviewing Jenn Bennett, the author of the Arcadia Bell series, on the blog. The latest book in the series just came out last month (check out my review here) and I took this opportunity to ask Jenn a couple of questions.

Where did you get the idea for the series?
Thanks so much for having me on your blog! I’m not really sure where I got the idea for the series. I mean, sure, I could tell you bits and pieces about what inspired the world-building or the setup. But when it comes down to it, my series isn’t about a Tiki bar owner or Earthbound demons or occult magic or weird supernatural mysteries. It’s about a girl in her mid-twenties who’s had a tough (and strange) life and is trying to build a new one. And a man who’s doing his best to raise a teenage son alone. And a teenage son who’s lost his mother. It’s about all these people, the connections they make, and how brave they have to be to hang on to those connections during times when it would be easier to walk away.

Which character did you have the most fun writing about?
Jupe Butler, the teenage son. He’s vivacious and curious, and he has no filter, so he gets to say what other characters—and the reader—might be thinking.

Which character can you most relate to?
Hmm. Probably Jupe’s father (and Arcadia’s demon boyfriend) Lon? He’s a photographer, and background is painting/art. And though I might not be empathic like he is, I’m pretty sensitive to other people around me.

Do you have any other series or books planned?
I have a new series coming from Penguin in 2014 called Roaring Twenties. It’s paranormal romance that takes place in 1920s San Francisco. The first book is BITTER SPIRITS, and it’s about a bootlegger who turns to a spirit medium for help when he becomes hexed and haunted. There are ghosts. A little magic. A mystery in Chinatown. Foggy San Francisco. Witty characters. And lots of swoon-y romance!

Why did you choose to break our hearts like you did with that ending (Binding the Shadows)?
If your heart was broken, I’m happy—not because I want to make you suffer, but because I want to make you feel. Good books take you to great emotional heights: wonder, excitement, joy, heartbreak, and thrills. If you care about the characters, and if the story is good, you’ll feel all those things right alongside them. And what could be better than that? Are you worried for Arcadia? You should be. Her life is in danger and her world has just been rocked. She is worthy of your emotion. At least, I happen to think so.

Is Crossing the Aethyr going to be the last Arcadia Bell book?
Yes, and maybe? It will be the last book in this phase of Arcadia’s life, and all the things hanging from book #3 will be answered. But whether I decide to write the next phase of her life…I’m not sure yet. I’m working on new projects, and I’d rather leave this story and these characters in a good place than stretch out something just to fill books. These characters are too important to me. I want them to get the story they deserve, and I want to leave on a high note. At least for now.

Can you tell us something about Crossing the Aethyr to make us feel better?
The story mostly centers on a road trip taken by Arcadia and Lon. Lots of one-on-one time for the two of them. There’s also a secondary intertwining storyline in which Jupe gets chapters from his POV for the very first time. (Watch out, people!) He meets a brand new character, someone who changes his life. I absolutely adore this character and hope you will, too. And at the end of the book, you’ll get to see a glimpse into the future. It’s probably the most romantic of all four books, and it made me cry a lot of happy tears to write it. Hey, maybe you’ll even shed a few yourself when you read it. I definitely think it’s worth both the wait and all the heartbreak, as most really good things are.

Thank you so much for joining us on the blog today Jenn! I think I feel a lot better about the ending to Binding the Shadows now and am more excited than afraid to read Crossing the Aethyr.

Author Interview- Seleste DeLaney (Gaming for Keeps)

Goodreads Summary:
Pen Holloway’s done with men—in real life. Guys in game are so much less drama. But when her partner from Heroes of Fallen Gods invites her to the convention of the year, she panics. What if he’s another jerk? What if he’s not?Cal Burrows is living his dream of being a spy. One of TRAIT’s misfit spies, but still a spy. Now, with the threat of mass murder looming, he’s forced to choose between keeping his mission a secret and protecting the girl of his dreams.Despite their attraction, Pen can’t help but suspect Cal’s hiding something. She also can’t shake the feeling he’s not as much of a stranger as he seems.

Find the book on goodreads here

What made you decide on writing this book? What inspired you?
First and foremost, my guild from Everquest (The 4th Wall). Ever since
most of us stopped playing EQ, I wanted to write a story featuring the
guild and the family atmosphere we always had. For the longest time I
pondered how to do it, and then the “Geek Collection” call came from
Entangled and I jumped on it with both feet.
When you pictured the characters did they reflect anyone particular in your life?
No. I don’t do “real-life” character models very often. Too often it
ends up with people cranky because I didn’t model characters after them.
So I use celebrities (actors/models/musicians) for most of my character
models. In this case, I always saw Pen as Amber Tamblyn and Cal as
Garrett Hedlund.
If you could meet any of your characters who would it be and why?
From GAMING FOR KEEPS: Definitely Marissa. She’s (hopefully) getting
her own book soon, and her life history is insanely interesting to me.
Plus, I think she could drink me under the table.
Tells us a bit more about Gaming for Keeps, what are the main key
points in the book?
It surrounds a couple who plays an MMORPG together but have never met.
Then they’re both at the same convention. Only, he’s a spy who has to
stop a terrorist, and she’s a woman who’s been burned by guys online
before and can’t get past the knowledge that he’s keeping secrets.
This is the official blurb:
Pen Holloway’s done with men—in real life. Guys in game are so much
less drama. But when her partner from Heroes of Fallen Gods invites her
to the convention of the year, she panics. What if he’s another jerk?
What if he’s not?
Cal Burrows is living his dream of being a spy. One of TRAIT’s misfit
spies, but still a spy. It’s the perfect job… until an arms dealer with
a taste for blood invades his not-so-secret geek haven. All Cal wanted
from ConDamned was to meet his on-line girl. Now, with the threat of
mass murder looming, he’s forced to choose between keeping his mission a
secret and protecting the girl of his dreams.
Despite their attraction, Pen can’t help but suspect Cal’s hiding
something. She also can’t shake the feeling he’s not as much of a
stranger as he seems.
If you had to pick just one favorite part of the book what would it
be?
The shower scene. It was actually added during edits, and I was giddy
the whole time I wrote it. It’s fun and flirty and sexy and ridiculous,
and in that way it perfectly encapsulates Cal and Pen’s relationship.
Thanks so much for having me here today, and if any of your readers
have questions, I’ll be popping in as often as I can to answer :)
A big big big thank you for Seleste for taking the time out of her busy schedule to come and talk to us, I really can't wait to read the book to find out what actually happens in the shower scene!

The "What If" Guy Blog Tour- Brooke Moss Interview

What would you do if you're "what if" guy showed up at the lowest point of your life?

(Autumn Cole clocked hers with an encyclopedia.)

After losing her job at a swanky Seattle art gallery and finding out
her father has been hospitalized, single mother Autumn Cole
reluctantly returns to her tiny hometown of Fairfield, Washington to
put the pieces of her life back together.
Her disgruntled twelve-year old son isn't thrilled about going from hip to hick, but Autumn's got it worse. She resumes her role as the daughter of the town drunk, promptly facing a crisis with her father that's been decades in the making.

Running into Henry Tobler, and nearly breaking his nose, is almost more than she can handle, but can rediscovering love-and herself-with her "what if" guy teach Autumn to forgive before it's too late?

Brooke writes complex, character-driven stories about kismet, reunited
lovers, first love, and the kind of romance that we should all have
the chance at finding. She prefers her stories laced with some humor
just for fun, and enough drama to keep her readers flipping the pages,
and begging for more!

When Brooke isn't spinning tales, she spends her time
drawing/cartooning, reading two books a week (ask her who her faves
are), watching movies then comparing them to books, and, of course,
wrangling four kids, one hubby she lovingly refers to as her "nerd",
and attempting to conquer the Mount Everest of laundry that is the
bane of her existence.

Twitter: https://twitter.com/BrookeMoss4

What inspired you do write this book?
I wanted to write a story about a single mother, and about coming back to a small town after years in a big city.

Did you picture yourself as the main character?
Sometimes, though Autumn is younger, thinner, and redheaded. :) But emotionally, yes. Very much so.

Were the characters realistic? Did you have someone in mind when writing them?
Absolutely. I envisioned myself in Autumn's situation. And her son, Elliott, was based on my oldest son, Liam.

What was the hardest part of writing The "What if" Guy?
The character of Billy Cole and his physical ailments were sort of emotional for me. I have a parent who struggles with alcoholism, & my had had just died of liver failure when I wrote the book.

Are you planning on writing any more books? If so would you like to give us a clue to your projects?
Yes! I have three other books available: The Carny, Bittersweet (a novella available in the Love Knows No Bounds anthology, and Keeping Secrets in Seattle. I also have a fantasy YA coming out sometime this summer, entitled Underwater. And a romantic women's fiction as well. It's titled Baby & Bump.

A massive thank you for Brooke Moss for taking the time and doing this interview with us here! I will be reviewing The "What If" Guy shortly so watch out for that!

A bit about C.A Williams:

I am a stay at home mom to two crazy little boys, with another baby on the way.(Finally Pink!) I've been married to my high school sweetheart for almost six years now and he is my biggest supporter. I've always had a love for books since the time I first started reading and started swapping books with my mom when I got a little older. My love for reading turned into a love for writing and I've enjoyed every second of it.

Facebook Tour Event-

The interview

1- What made you decide on writing this book? What inspired you? I’m the biggest fan of a happily ever after and thats totally what I planned on doing with this book. But then I started writing it and Justin creeped his way in. No ones perfect and I wanted to show the struggles of that between the characters.

2- When you pictured the characters did they reflect anyone particular
in your life? Not so much pictured, but more of their personalities are integrated from people in my life. Della’s snarky attitude with her mom reminds me so much of my sister because she has no filter whatsoever.
3- If you could meet any of your characters who would it be and why? That one would be so easy. Justin. I just fell in love with him as I wrote this book and who wouldn’t want to meet a guy like that outside of the pages? I don’t think my husband would like it very much though!
4- Tells us a bit more about Chaotic, what are the main key
points in the book? Chaotic follows Della through the struggles she has with overcoming her past and moving forward. Not everything's perfect, just like nothing in the world is, but she will eventually learn from her mistakes. She did a little bit of growing up in Chaotic, and while some people might not like the cliffhanger ending, I wanted to make it as real as possible.
4- What was the hardest part of writing Chaotic? The hardest part probably would have been not giving the happily ever after ending...yet. It will come, I promise. And the relationship between Della and her mom. I have a great relationship with my mom, but for some reason in almost every book I write, the main character doesn’t get along with their mom. Maybe I’ll switch that up in the next book.
5- Are you planning on writing any more books? If so would you like to give us a clue to your projects? Yes, I’m currently working on two right now.  I plan on releasing the book #3  in my Journey Series sometime in the summer of 2013. The book is titled One Simple Step and focuses on the main character from the first two books best friend, Ally. And then in the fall, I’ll be releasing the follow up to Chaotic, Twisted Bliss.

A massive thank you for C.A. Williams for taking the time out of her busy schedule to talk to us today. I for one cannot wait to read her book!
