Challenging yourselves to explore a genre you aren't comfortable with

So recently I decided that after school ends (in 1 week 3 days) I am going to start challenging myself more.
When asked what my favorite genre is I usually say I can read anything because I like all genres and while that is true I'd be lying because when it comes to the dark side of the mystery genre? I am scared.

Of course there is a reason for this. When I was a 13 year old, I somehow ended up getting my hands on Mystic River by Dennis Lehane and reading it. It's a psychological thriller. So anyway, Mystic River isn't the type of book that 13th year olds should be reading. Of course that is not to say they cannot, there are plenty of mature readers but I wouldn't recommend it. The book was kind of intense and shocked the hell out of me and so ever since that I haven't read any 'dark mysteries/thrillers/suspense' novels.

Recently I've been getting this urge to read the darker stuff, I want to read horror, I want to read things that will creep the hell out of me and will scare me and so I've decided it's time to step out of my comfort zone and am going to challenge myself to read at least 10 books that fall under the following categories:

-horror
-dark mystery (okay so there is no such thing but what I am trying to say is the intense stuff)
-psychological thrillers

I've already started looking into books that would fall under those categories and I am kind of excited because this means I can finally read Stephen King.

Are there certain genres you don't read because of 'some reason'? Challenge yourself!

  1. I love all kinds of genres, but there are some that I put on the back burner and don't read as much. This summer I'm hoping to read a few more romances and a few more mysteries. Good luck with your challenge!

  2. I tend to avoid classical American literature. I've never been able to connect with American novels enough to enjoy them. Minus The Great Gatsby which I have a deep passion for! Especially after watching the Leonardo Dicaprio film!

You should look into Stuart MacBride. I recently read his book "Birthdays for the Dead" after being convinced by a random poster to purchase it! I can't explain what attracted me to the book - maybe it was a the blurb? - but I literally bought it on eBook the moment I read the poster. It's an extremely suspenseful book and I've been told his other novels are much in the same!

Good luck with your reading challenge :)

    1. I am not fond of classics in general. I've never read one outside of school so I know how you feel. I still need to watch the Leonardo DiCaprio one :D

Thank you for the recommendation :) I'll look into it

      Thanks :)
