Author Interview Todd M.Thiede

In the small city of Rockton, Illinois, someone is tired of waiting. He’s tired of standing in line at the grocery store and tired of waiting at the drive-through line. Now he’s doing something about it.

What genre are you most comfortable writing?

I am most comfortable writing mystery because I have a great imagination.  My wife hates watching shows like SVU and CSI with me because I am really good at solving who did what and why.

When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing at a very young age.  I wrote stories in school and in seventh grade I actually wrote my first book. It wasn’t very long but it was a murder mystery.  The Junior HIgh Murders was the title.  I didn’t get a good grade on it because my teacher thought it was too gory for her.  I have always been interested in mysteries because of my natural investigative mind.  

What’s your favorite place in the entire world?

My favorite place in the entire world is anywhere my wife is.  I truly enjoy spending time with her and my kids.  If I could write full time and spend time with my family that would make me the happiest man alive.

What was the hardest part about writing this book? 

The hardest part was the background and depth of the characters.  I wrote the story in a short period of time but putting on paper was not easy.  My wife really pushed me and she also helped me finish it.

What are your goals as a writer?

My goals are to write full time and have the Max Larkin detective series be a top seller.  I would like to have Max Larkin be in about 8 books total.  I am currently writing the second one now and should be done in about 2 months.

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out? 

The best tools available today are all on your computer.  Spell check and grammar check.  These do not compare to a good editor though.  The editor is the most important thing for any writer.  You can read and read your own book but you will always miss something.  The editor won’t.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

 I like to watch movies and hang with my family.  I would rather be hanging out with them more than anything.  When they are at school, work, or wherever and I am alone I like to play video games to escape the world around me.

What are your current writing projects now? 

I am currently writing book two of the Max Larkin detective series.  This is one is called “Lies to Die For”.  It follows our two young detectives in Rockton Illinois yet again.  

How do you promote this book?

I promoted this book with twitter, facebook, and book blogs.  Marketing is not my forte but I have had great luck with facebook and twitter.  My publicist is working on more book signings and radio interviews as well. 

Who designed the cover?

I came up with the design of the cover.  My publisher sent me many pictures of the clock on the cover and although I put a lot of time in picking the clock.  They didn’t agree with me and came up with that cover.  Although the overall cover design was my idea they used their expertise in making it look like it does.

Author Interview with Maureen Mayer

1- What made you decide on writing this book? What inspired you?

I’m an avid reader, and this past year I decided I wanted to write a book of my own. Problem was...I had no idea what to write! I would literally sit there and try to force the ideas to come out, but they just would flow. Little did I know, all I had to do was sit back and wait for the idea to find me. I was sitting at home one day thinking about my life and certain aspects that I wish were different or that I could change, and that’s when it hit me. The initial spark that triggered the idea for Relinquishing Liberty was the thought of just running away from everything and making a fresh start. That’s where Liberty came in. She was just screaming and begging to come out and tell her story, so that’s exactly what I did. I let her write the story…I was just simply her instrument.

I also owe a lot of authors credit for inspiring me because if it weren’t for them reigniting my love for reading, I never would have written Relinquishing Liberty.

2- When you pictured the characters did they reflect anyone particular

in your life?

I definitely see a bit of myself in Liberty’s character, but I think the one character who reflects the most qualities of someone in my life is Shayne. It wasn’t until I finished writing the book that I realized he is so much life my boyfriend, Michael. He came into my life when I least expected it, and he is by far my missing puzzle piece.

3- If you could meet any of your characters who would it be and why?

I’d have to go with Maddie. She is such a little spitfire and has such a great sense of humor. She says what she wants and doesn’t hold back. It’s impossible not to love her! I’m sure she’d drive me insane at first, but I could definitely see myself getting along with her.

4- Tells us a bit more about Relinquishing Liberty, what are the main key points in the book?

Relinquishing Liberty is about a young woman forced to give up the life she once knew so she can take care of her parents, who have yet to learn how to cope with her brother’s suicide. Liberty is left to pick of the pieces, and after four years of having to put her own life on hold, she finally decides she’s had enough. She’s ready to take back control of her life and makes the decision to up and leave everyone and everything she’s ever known in order to make a fresh start. When Liberty arrives in Savannah, she meets Brett and Maddie, who slowly begin to break down the walls that she had built up after her brother’s suicide.

The last thing she expects is to fall for the reformed player, Shayne Thompson, but soon she discovers they have a lot more in common than just a physical attraction. A secret from Shayne’s past is revealed, and Liberty begins to question everything she’s ever felt for him. She is forced to choose between following her heart and giving up the one person who finally made her feel whole again.

5- What was the hardest part of writing Relinquishing Liberty?

A lot of authors say the hardest part is writing the actual book itself...and it was. I hit a road a block when Liberty decided to give me the silent treatment, and within the four months that I wrote Relinquishing Liberty, I probably spent at least a month not writing anything at all. It was extremely frustrating, and there were so many times that I just wanted to scrap the idea and give up, but everyone who has been supporting me since the very beginning continued to push me through, and 101,400 words later, Relinquishing Liberty was finished.

6- Are you planning on writing any more books? If so would you like to give us a clue to your projects?

Absolutely! As of right now I have plans for at least three more books. I’ve just begun working on the second book in the Second Chances series, Unforeseen Heartbeat, which is Maddie’s book. The third book in the series, which is currently untitled, will be Brett’s book. After that I plan on writing a stand alone book that will also fall into the new adult genre. Hopefully I’ll get inspiration for more books along the way!

The book is neither amazing nor terrible. It is somewhere in the middle. It’s a fun little read but the story line is just so used up.

This book reminded me so much of Promise Me This by Sarah Ashley Jones that I just wanted to shoot myself. The plot is not original and you can guess exactly what is going to happen. Bad whore of a guy meets cute annoying girl who then changes him and makes him better only for her. Yeah every girls dream I get it. But this whole plot line has been used up so much by everyone and I really didn’t want this book to turn out like this.

Anyway. Relinquishing Liberty follows the “trend” of the bad boy meets girl who turns his whole life around and makes him good. Okay fine. I can deal with that. The book swears a lot-, which I don’t really mind I have a bad potty mouth myself but with this book it only worked half of the time. Anyway, awkward on the first page I thought Liberty was actually a guy (by the way she was thinking and talking) very awkward.

The start of the book was good. It was manageable. I only had two problems with it. When Liberty and Shayne shook hands after meeting for the second time apparently that took five minutes, and her friend Maddie pushes her over because she met Shayne and she wanted more details. My friends don’t tend to push me over when I meet a guy and don’t tell them straight away. Maddie’s character does get a little annoying but she’s a sweetheart.

Some of the things that happened during the book made me burst out laughing and look mental in front of my mom. She thinks I need some serious help now. But the style of writing was really good. I really enjoyed Mayer’s story telling in this book. Not to mention the great cover for the book! Oof.

Having said that; I enjoyed reading the book. Despite the plot being used up over and over again, and the characters becoming a little bit annoying and some of the ridiculous things that happened during the book I over looked this because I enjoyed reading the book. It was a fun book to read and even though it took me a few days to finish it I didn’t want to quit. I wanted to find out what happened at the end and I’m glad I stuck around to find out.

Really like the simplicity to this cover! 

This is one of those books where you really enjoy but you’re not too fussed about the ending or what’s to come as literally anything could happen.

The story is about people getting the flu and dying… that is the apocalypse. Zoe and Dani two best friends who live on the opposite side of the country need to find each other after the “ending”. That is the jist of the book. Basically people die and then they gain these “abilities” which are pretty much superpowers (some can talk to you in your mind, others can calm you down, manipulate you) it’s all great fun (apart from all the dead people and their bodies just piling up)

So with the new hype of apocalypse with World War Z coming out in the cinema (which was pretty awesome) I couldn’t wait to be a part of this book tour and yay me for signing up for it. I really loved this book. I thought it was a really interesting idea and I really liked it.

The style of writing is brilliant. Each chapter is told by either Dani or Zoe and they switch about which I thought was pretty awesome as you get to know what is happening with both of the girls. At the end of the chapter the girls write emails to each other (who knew the internet would still be up after the end of the world?) which got really annoying. At first it was nice as the relationship between the girls grew but holy hell did that get boring. It was just re reading the chapter but with more chatty comments.

I love how two authors worked together on this book, it’s one of the first books that I’ve read that two authors are included in the whole story; and they really pulled through the book had a really good flow to it that I loved.

To be honest I would love to have one of those abilities… no I’d want more than one it would be so awesome… but shame about all the people dying and not surviving the virus.

About the genius behind this book:

This book takes place in the future after the third and fourth wars where the government runs everything. And when I say everything I mean everything from food to the houses to the jobs that everyone does, they even decide who you marry. At the very start of the book I kinda agreed with the government controlling everything it gave equality to everyone and no one was different I even kinda liked the idea of the marriage thing, they chose you a spouse and off you go. But then I started to think about it more and I would hate it so just scratch that part of me being weird before.

I loved this book. It stands out, it’s different, it’s new and I haven’t come across anything like this. I’m so glad I got the chance to read this book.

There’s a hint of the Hunger Games and a sprinkle of Wither at the very start with the marriages and the world being broken. This book is great the story is well written without any loopholes, it’s fast paced and so easy to pick up that I felt like I was there myself being sucked into the story, not to mention the never ending surprises that Ruth cleverly placed throughout the book.

More to the story- Olivia and Josh are the best of friends and everything is great they even get picked together to get married (yay for them). Might not seem like a massive deal but the fact that they had no choice after they turn 18 and have to marry someone that the government picks out for them is not something that anyone would be happy about. But their happiness of not having to be married to a complete stranger and pretending to get along with them is short lived after Olivia is arrested for being born. No seriously that was the reason for her arrest. Women can’t conceive naturally and their babies have to be made in a lab (that must suck) however Olivia was a little miracle and was conceived after her parents did the do. Therefore Olivia and Josh had to flee the city of Genesis.

Okay so I will stop talking about the plot now because as much as I want to yell at everyone to go and read this amazing book I can’t because apparently that’s not what people like. Who knew. The plot is really amazing and I cannot wait for the next book. This is one hell of a book and if the next book won’t be as good as the first I will cry.

Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over again until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation-favorite character was Data by far-, and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.

A drone, as deep and low as the growl of a primordial beast, resonated in my gut and I yanked my hand away. My heart sped like someone had fired a starter gun to a race, and my chest tightened until I couldn’t breathe.

That blaring blasphemy wasn’t from my ship.

The sound tapered off, leaving me in silence. I stared at the bones, wondering if I’d imagined it, or if I should hide here in the ruins in case the sound came back.

What am I doing? I’m a team expedition leader, for crying out loud!

I pulled myself back together. Everyone else was attending the ceremony on the ship. The thick hull, designed to protect us from deep space, blocked all sounds from the outside world. I was the only one who would have heard it. The only one who could investigate. I thought about going back for help, but every second I delayed, the source of the sound could disappear. Besides, I didn’t want the credit taken away from me. Not this time.

I scrambled to the window and climbed over the ledge, throwing myself down so fast my ankles exploded in pain. Cursing, I hobbled up the embankment of the excavation site. The sound boomed around me, vibrating the crystals underneath my feet. I fell to my knees and covered my ears. It reminded me of warping metal, growling monsters, and screeching alarms all at the same time.

The sound came from the jungle. I pulled myself up the incline and peered over the edge. A dry, fiery breeze blew my hair back, and I looked above the rustling canopy.

My heart stammered then beat into a frenzy. A massive ring of a ship, twice as large as the New Dawn, hovered over the jungle. Spires jutted from the top and the bottom, like a two-sided pin cushion. Blinking reddish lights adorned the ends. The hull was a dull gray shield of impenetrable metal with no sight panels or markings of any kind.

The buzzing sound made my eardrums throb. I pressed my nose up against the crystal ledge and peered over as my whole body shook. The lowest spire, thick as a nuclear reactor, lengthened from the belly of the ship until the tip hovered a meter from the jungle canopy. A trap door opened, and a beam of white light seared a hole in the foliage. The smell of burnt vines choked my throat, and I cowered against the side of the ledge.

I have to warn the ship.

 What inspired you do write this book?  

I wanted to write a story about a single mother, and about coming back to a small town after years in a big city. 

 Did you picture yourself as the main character? 

Sometimes, though Autumn is younger, thinner, and redheaded. :) But emotionally, yes. Very much so.

 Were the characters realistic? Did you have someone in mind when writing them?

Absolutely. I envisioned myself in Autumn's situation. And her son, Elliott, was based on my oldest son, Liam.

 What was the hardest part of writing The "What if" Guy?

The character of Billy Cole and his physical ailments were sort of emotional for me. I have a parent who struggles with alcoholism, & my had had just died of liver failure when I wrote the book.

 Are you planning on writing any more books? If so would you like to give us a clue to your projects? 

Yes! I have three other books available: The Carny, Bittersweet (a novella available in the Love Knows No Bounds anthology, and Keeping Secrets in Seattle. I also have a fantasy YA coming out sometime this summer, entitled Underwater. And a romantic women's fiction as well. It's titled Baby & Bump.

I’m not going to lie. I really did not expect to love this series, it’s magic for goodness sake. But I love it nevertheless. This book less so than the first, the second book in the series starts off slowish. I completely understand why and it works so well with the story and everything however compared to everything that has happened in the last book I was kinda disappointed with the start of this book. Sure there are little secrets that Joclyn needs to discover and for everything to make sense and of course for her to train so she can go head to head with the love of her life, her mate, her everything. But stillllllll.

The story can grip you, can absorb you into it and make you live it but there are some bits that are far too fairy tale for this story. It works and it doesn’t at the same time, the whole magic heals you thing (a little bit too Charmed for my liking) I wanted more spells, more woosh, more explosions (okay that would pretty much be Charmed and witchy and not go with the story [but I wanted the magic to be more distinguished]). Okay what is up with the flying? I get its magic and it’s all great and magical but seriously flying. That’s a little bit too farfetched for me, I’m not saying jump on a broom stick and fly during the night but I expected something different I guessed. It doesn’t mean I loved it any less, no but just have conflicted feelings about this.

This is my problem with books. I always like the wrong guy. I get that Joclyn and Ryland are meant to be. That they are soul-mates, and love each other and I love that. But I still like Ilyan, I have no idea why but I think he’s really adorable and cute apart from his hair, I don’t like long hair on guys it creeps me out. I think it’s the fact that Ry is now evil and all I need to kill the love of my life because I’ve lost all of my memory including being in love and my bitch of a father is controlling me. Wow it really does suck to be Ryland.

The story goes so smoothly! It’s great, there aren’t that many books that are told so nicely like this. Until it gets to a battle. Then everything I read is mush, I don’t know if it’s me but everything slows down and gets confusing  I have no idea what is happening half the time during one of the battles; and I don’t know if it’s because I’m not a big fan of them or if it’s just the way there told. I always feel confused after a battle takes place which is a shame as I love this book and the rest of the time everything runs so slickly.

I did kinda go bleugh on this review and it might sound as if I didn't enjoy the book but that’s anything but. I was glued to my kindle for a whole day!
